SOUTH CAPE AND KLEIN KAROO DIARY

SUIDKAAP EN KLEIN KAROO DAGBOEK

NEWSLETTER – NUUSBRIEF FEB 2012

Hi from a warm and sunny De Rust.

This part of the Klein Karoo must be a weather man’s nightmare. The temps are up and down like a yoyo: 33 to 26 to 25 and back to 30+. They forecast cloud and we have bright sunshine. We have only had temps above 40 about three times this summer and we are going into the second half of February. Last year this time we were cooking with temps in the mid forties. However, we are grateful and the cooler weather is welcomed.

Change in the Format of the South Cape and Klein Karoo Diary.

We are receiving a whole stack of news items. Last month the Newsletter was quite long and this month it is longer. GREAT! The problem is that it makes reading a bit difficult. As a result we are going to break the Newsletter into Towns/Regions. So if you want to see what is happening in George then you simply click on the George Category on the right hand side of the page. For Prince Albert click the Category on the right, etc, etc.

As news items come in from other towns they will be added to the Category List on the right. So if we get an item from Sedgefield next month, we will add a Sedgefield Category.

So, instead of having to scroll all the way through the long newsletter, just click on the Category you want to see on the right.

Keep the news items coming, and please send some photos to brighten the page up a bit. I can use stock pics but the real thing is better! You could even just send your Logo.

I need your help on a really important issue!

The eMail List that I received from Rene is giving problems. I cannot import it into the new database in my autoresponder as there are too many “bounces” – address unknown replies, etc. Should I continue trying, I could risk having my account suspended because of the strict Anti Spam Laws. I DO NOT WANT THIS TO HAPPEN!

I am sending out emails to the old list 10 at a time manually which is taking a lot of time. Out of each 10 emails I am only getting an average of 2 valid responses.

Would you help me by forwarding the emails you receive each month to members of your email list, and ask them to subscribe via the Subscription Form on the top right hand side of the page.  In this way we could recover some past members who could be on your list, and maybe get a few new ones.

I truly appreciate your help in this regard. Help to spread the word about our Newsletter as well.

CHECK THE CATEGORIES ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE FOR THE LATEST NEWS!

With best regards,

Jack.

South Cape and Klein Karoo Diary – Stories With A Message

Five lessons about the way we treat people

1 – First Important Lesson – Cleaning Lady.

During my second month of college, our professor

Gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student

And had breezed through the questions until I read

The last one:

“What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?”

Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the

Cleaning woman several times. She was tall,

Dark-haired and in her 50′s, but how would I know her name?

I handed in my paper, leaving the last question

Blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if

The last question would count toward our quiz grade.

“Absolutely, ” said the professor.. “In your careers,

You will meet many people. All are significant.. They

Deserve your attention and care, even if all you do

Is smile and say “hello..”

I’ve never forgotten that lesson.. I also learned her

Name
was Dorothy.

2. – Second Important Lesson – Pickup in the Rain

One night, at 11:30 p.m., an older African American

Woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway

Trying to endure a lashing rain storm. Her car had

Broken down and she desperately needed a ride.

Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car.

A young white man stopped to help her, generally

Unheard of in those conflict-filled 1960′s. The man

Took her to safety, helped her get assistance and

Put her into a taxicab.

She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his

Address and thanked him. Seven days went by and a

Knock came on the man’s door. To his surprise, a

Giant console color TV was delivered to his home. A

Special note was attached.

It read:

“Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway

The other night. The rain drenched not only my

Clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along.

Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying

Husband’s’ bedside just before he passed away… God

Bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving

Others.”

Sincerely,

Mrs. Nat King Cole.

3 – Third Important Lesson – Always remember those

Who serve.

In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less,

A10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and
Sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in
Front of him.

“How much is an ice cream sundae?” he asked.
“Fifty cents,” replied the waitress.

The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and
Studied the coins in it.”Well, how much is a plain dishof ice cream?” he inquired.

By now more people were waiting for a table and the
Waitress was growing impatient..

“Thirty-five cents,” she brusquely replied.
The little boy again counted his coins.

“I’ll have the plain ice cream,” he said.
The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on
The table and walked away The boy finished the ice
Cream, paid the cashier and left.. When the waitress
Came back, she began to cry as she wiped down
the Table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish,

Were two nickels and five pennies..

You see, he couldn’t have the sundae, because he had
To have enough left to leave her a tip.

4 – Fourth Important Lesson. – The obstacle in Our Path.

In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a
Roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if
Anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the
King’s’ wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by
And simply walked around it.. Many loudly blamed the
King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did
Anything about getting the stone out of the way.

Then a peasant came along carrying a load of
Vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the
peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the
stone to the side of the road. After much pushing
and straining, he finally succeeded. After the
peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed
a purse lying in the road where the boulder had
been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note
from the King indicating that the gold was for the
person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The
peasant learned what many of us never understand!

Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve
our condition.

5 – Fifth Important Lesson – Giving When it Counts…

Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a
hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who
was suffering from a rare & serious disease. Her only
chance of recovery appeared to be a blood
transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had
miraculously survived the same disease and had
developed the antibodies needed to combat the
illness. The doctor explained the situation to her
little brother, and asked the little boy if he would
be willing to give his blood to his sister.

I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a
deep breath and saying, “Yes I’ll do it if it will
save her.” As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed
next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing
the color returning to her cheek. Then his face
grew pale and his smile faded.

He looked up at the doctor and asked with a
trembling voice, “Will I start to die right away”.

Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the
doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his
sister all of his blood in order to save her.

Most importantly…. Live with no regrets, Treat people the way you want to be treated, Work like you don’t need the money, Love like you’ve never been hurt, and Dance like you do when nobody’s watching.

IT’S WHAT YOU SCATTER

I was at the corner grocery store buying some early potatoes… I noticed a small boy, delicate of bone and feature, ragged but clean, hungrily appraising a basket of freshly picked green peas.

I paid for my potatoes but was also drawn to the display of fresh green peas. I am a pushover for creamed peas and new potatoes.

Pondering the peas, I couldn’t help overhearing the conversation between Mr. Miller (the store owner) and the ragged boy next to me.

‘Hello Barry, how are you today?’

‘H’lo, Mr. Miller. Fine, thank ya. Jus’ admirin’ them peas. They sure look good’

‘They are good, Barry. How’s your Ma?’
‘Fine. Gittin’ stronger alla’ time.’
‘Good. Anything I can help you with?’
‘No, Sir. Jus’ admirin’ them peas.’
‘Would you like to take some home?’ asked Mr. Miller.

‘No, Sir. Got nuthin’ to pay for ‘em with.’

‘Well, what have you to trade me for some of those peas?’

‘All I got’s my prize marble here.’

‘Is that right? Let me see it’, said Miller..

‘Here ’tis. She’s a dandy.’

‘I can see that. Hmm mmm, only thing is this one is blue and I sort of go for red. Do you have a red one like this at home?’ the store owner asked.

‘Not zackley but almost.’

‘Tell you what… Take this sack of peas home with you and next trip this way let me look at that red marble’. Mr. Miller told the boy.

‘Sure will. Thanks Mr. Miller,

Mrs. Miller, who had been standing nearby, came over to help me.

With a smile she said, ‘There are two other boys like him in our community, all three are in very poor circumstances. Jim just loves to bargain with them for peas, apples, tomatoes, or whatever.

When they come back with their red marbles, and they always do, he decides he doesn’t like red after all and he sends them home with a bag of produce for a green marble or an orange one, when they come on their next trip to the store.’

I left the store smiling to myself, impressed with this man. A short time later I moved to Colorado , but I never forgot the story of this man, the boys, and their bartering for marbles.

Several years went by, each more rapid than the previous one. Just recently I had occasion to visit some old friends in that Idaho community and while I was there learned that Mr. Miller had died.

They were having his visitation that evening and knowing my friends wanted to go, I agreed to accompany them.

Upon arrival at the mortuary we fell into line to meet the relatives of the deceased and to offer whatever words of comfort we could.

Ahead of us in line were three young men. One was in an army uniform and the other two wore nice haircuts, dark suits and white shirts…all very professional looking… They approached Mrs. Miller, standing composed and smiling by her husband’s casket.

Each of the young men hugged her, kissed her on the cheek, spoke briefly with her and moved on to the casket. Her misty light blue eyes followed them as, one by one; each young man stopped briefly and placed his own warm hand over the cold pale hand in the casket. Each left the mortuary awkwardly, wiping his eyes.

Our turn came to meet Mrs. Miller. I told her who I was and reminded her of the story from those many years ago and what she had told me about her husband’s bartering for marbles.

With her eyes glistening, she took my hand and led me to the casket.

‘Those three young men who just left were the boys I told you about.

They just told me how they appreciated the things Jim ‘traded’ them. Now, at last, when Jim could not change his mind about color or size……they came to pay their debt.’

‘We’ve never had a great deal of the wealth of this world,’ she confided, ‘but right now, Jim would consider himself the richest man in Idaho…’

With loving gentleness she lifted the lifeless fingers of her deceased husband. Resting underneath were three exquisitely shined red marbles.

The Moral:
We will not be remembered by our words, but by our kind deeds. Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath.

Today I wish you a day of ordinary miracles ~ A fresh pot of coffee you didn’t make yourself….

An unexpected phone call from an old friend…. Green stoplights on your way to work….

The fastest line at the grocery store…..

A good sing-along song on the radio..

Your keys found right where you left them.

Send this to the people you’ll never forget. I just did…

If you don’t send it to anyone, it means you are in way too much of a hurry to even notice the ordinary miracles when they occur.

IT’S NOT WHAT YOU GATHER, BUT WHAT YOU SCATTER THAT TELLS WHAT KIND OF LIFE YOU HAVE LIVED!

Die Engelse verklaring sê die volgende: “There shall be Showers of Blessing, first of all refers to Spiritual blessings which will generate economic, physical and domestic blessings as well”

– jinne julle is kosbaar!

Jaco & Lizette

(Luk.7:48 – En Jesus sê vir haar: Jou sondes is vergewe!)

May my life be like a finely tuned instrument upon which the master musician creates a melody that brings his peace to all who hear!

I will sing to the Lord…I will make music to the Lord, the God of Israel

THE DREAM

The Eden to Addo vision is based on the practical potential within the landscape connecting the Western and Eastern Cape of South Africa, but this vision is guided by a deeper question and dream: What if we could re-establish ancient elephant migration paths across the Cape, what then? What other wildlife will benefit and how will that restore the ecological balance of the region.

OUR VISION

To link three mega-reserves, namely the Garden Route National Park, The Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve and the Addo Elephant National Park  by means of natural corridors  to protect and restore the integrity of bio-diversity and eco-system functioning.

OUR MISSION

To assist and engage with  landowners and all  stakeholders to identify and develop a living corridor from Eden to Addo by applying sound land-use practices, encouraging a diversity of environmentally sustainable livelihoods and linking ecological important areas , for the benefit of biodiversity and the extended community.

What is a corridor ?

A Conservation Corridor is an effective pattern of habitats linking existing protected areas to ensure ecological connectivity for species, communities and ecological processes. At it's simplest a conservation corridor is a strip of land connecting two protected areas. In recent years conservationists have acknowledged that putting a fence around an area and proclaiming a park or reserve is insufficient to protect the patterns and processes that are required for proper ecological functioning at a regional level. Fragmentation of the landscape causes the death of species and therefore a decrease in biodiversity. A key element in conservation biology is reversing the extinction of species.
Protection and restoration of connectivity is not an artificial change to the landscape: rather it is the loss of connectivity and the isolation of natural environments that is the artefact of human land use (Noss 1991).

In most situations the linking habitat already exists, it is a characteristic feature of natural environments, but has not been identified as such or managed appropriately. Linkages in the landscape exist in various forms, landscape linkages, riparian linkages, hedgerows, fencerows and roadside linkages.

The functions of a corridor are as follows

  • To enable migration and interbreeding of plants and animals
  • Facilitate movement between ecosystems by both large and small animals
  • Maintain key ecological processes (seed dispersal, pollination, nutrient cycling, predator-prey interactions, proper functioning of the hydrological cycle)  across different types of habitats
  • Maintain habitats that aid movement by animals through a degraded environment
  • Serve as a fire escape
  • Allow for the re-colonization of indigenous plants in degraded patches
  • Enhance the long-term survival of larger herbivore and carnivore species by safe-guarding their home ranges
  • Ensure the flow of ecosystem services that contribute to the overall ecological sustainability of an area
  • Enhance the biodiversity of the landscape in which the corridor occurs
